The Hobbit is a series of films directed by Peter Jackson, set in a fictional world created by author J.R.R. Tolkien back in 1937.
The Hobbit movies are the prequel to The Lord Of The Rings films. All six films were directed, co-written and co-produced by Peter Jackson.
If you’d like to watch The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the other Hobbit trilogy movies directed by Peter Jackson, there are a few ways to do so. But they entail having a subscription to one or more streaming services. That can become a very expensive scenario, of course.
We propose you take a look at Together Price, the online platform for sharing the cost of your subscriptions. With Together Price, you can share an HBO Max subscription, saving more than 66% of the cost.
The Hobbit’s Middle Earth adventure is divided into three films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).
In The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm) is old and writing his memoirs in a Red Book so that his nephew, Frodo, may one day get to know about his adventures.
Bilbo begins with the story of the Realm of Erebor in the Lonely Mountain, where the Dwarves lived under the rule of King Thror and of the immense riches stored there. The realm was peaceful and prosperous until the terrible dragon Smaug came along, wanted the treasure and conquered the realm, forcing the Dwarves to escape. That day, King Thranduil’s elves stood watching from a nearby hilltop and did nothing to help the Dwarves.
Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen) tricks young Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) into organising a dinner at his house in The Shire for the Dwarves, with the aim of recruiting Bilbo for the epic quest to reclaim Erebor back from Smaug under the leadership of legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). At first, the reluctant hobbit refuses to go, but he has a change of heart and, the day after, sets out to unite with the spirited group of Dwarves heading to reclaim their mountain home.
Among trolls, orcs and elves, we find beloved characters from The Lord of The Rings movies: Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), Saruman the White (Christopher Lee), Gollum (Andy Serkis), King Elrond (Hugo Weaving) and Frodo Baggins (Elija Wood), among others.
Curiosities:
Peter Jackson can be seen running away from Smaug when the Lonely Mountain is ablaze.
Andy Serkis as Gollum is only on this part of The Hobbit trilogy.
The once reluctant hobbit Bilbo Baggins and his spirited group of companions, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), proceed east, encountering many dangers along the path towards the Lonely Mountain (the mountain home of the Dwarfs), and facing the fearsome dragon Smaug to take their treasure back.
Curiosities:
Peter Jackson can be seen walking out of the tavern in Bree in his habitual directors’ starring role, although it is more of a cameo, of course.
The voice of the dragon Smaug is none other than Benedict Cumberbatch.
In the third part of this fantasy adventure, Bilbo and his companions watch from the Lonely Mountain while an enraged Smaug sets Laketown on fire while the villagers and the Elves congregate on Erebor to reclaim the amazing treasure. Thorin, in the meantime, is taken over by madness caused by the hypnotic allure of the treasure. Alliances and friendships are ruined by greed, and a devastating war between all species is preparing. Sauron’s evil army, led by Azog the Orc, emerges from the depths of the earth. This war will be decisive for the future of the Middle-Earth.
A curiosity:
